Getting away...with murder?
The party had been a great success. He had mingled, munched, made small talk, making sure not to stand out by either too much silence or too much chat; only the most perceptive of fellow guests would have noticed the scrutiny he could hide behind a wry smile. And, even if he did say so himself, these were not the smartest people. Had any of them even been published? Were they widely known experts on the human mind? Barely, he was swimming in the shallow end at this gathering.
And so it came as no surprise to Matthias Vargo that his plan had been a complete success. Lena Delacroix had many enemies, and in the course of his job he had discovered that many clients held her in common as a cross to bear. So many rants from patients about that woman, and so many of their own dirty secrets held in his files. And so, when she became a problem to him too, he knew just how to deal with her. A little suggestion, a hint of potential blackmail, and willing accomplices were easy to ensnare.
Clementine Wilde was easy to persuade. The haste with which the chef signed up almost suggested that, left to her own devices, she'd have concocted a scheme of her own before too long. Ah well, too late now to just leave her to it, they might as well go ahead. As for Vincent Rook, who better than a detective to lead everyone up the wrong path? As for his own role? Call it the clean-up guy, making sure Lena was well and truly out of commission. And then watch as a room of guests turned on each other, recriminations flying.
Clementine was the first to be revealed as a guilty party, and the detective soon joined her in the spotlight. But nobody turned the spotlight on him. After all, why would they? He could just breeze on out of there, free as a bird.
There was just one thing though - where the hell was his cigarette holder?
