Bad Omens, Madrid, and Squirrel

<<
Sigrun was lost in thought. This was an unmistakable bad omen; Vigdis had learned this lesson well from the past. It was clear that Sigrun was about to stir up new trouble. But how soon? Tomorrow? In a few hours? Or perhaps if she was scheming something big, she might need a little more time. For the moment, though, it was bedtime, despite the sunrise casting its light on the parquet floors said otherwise.

When she woke up, the sunrise light on the parquet had been replaced by the reddish hues of sunset. Heading downstairs to the living room, she noticed that Sigrun was still at home. Damn it! This was clearly a bad sign. Sigrun was evidently planning something major. But wait, what was that in her lap? Oh, a rat. Damn it!

She tried to provoke Sigrun a little, but received no reply. As with everything else, this was another troubling sign. Sigrun was so absorbed in her planning that she didn’t even take the chance to snap back at her. Maybe tying her up right then would have been a good idea, but she didn’t. Instead, she took her coffee and retreated to her room.

She had to call Silas. He was the one she had pulled into this situation in New York, and now it was time to fill him in on what was going on. While there were a few things in their conversations that could be seen as bad omens, the Madrid invitation wasn’t one of them. At least, it didn’t seem to be at the moment.

It would be wise to start getting ready for Madrid, but first, she needed to sort out the rat problem. She made another call. “Hi there! Can I borrow a moment of my favourite vet’s time?” Her father immediately recognised from her tone that this call wasn’t a good sign. “How are you, love?” he asked with concern. “Yes, it’s me. We’ve got a bit of a ‘Squirrel’ issue.”
