Dear, Nina, I know you know something’s happening today. You might be too young to understand any of it, but I can see it in how you frown and follow the catering staff across the room—you know something’s different.
Today is your mom’s birthday, see. I think you two have met. She’s the ever-present, soothing voice you hear, the smile that beams with pride constantly over you. You

know her the way I do. Not yet, anyway. So let me tell you something: you are one lucky soul to have picked the right mother.
Your mom is one of a kind. She looks posh, sure. She might even act a little spoiled from time to time—but beneath all that, she’s got a heart full of love. She’s ferociously faithful. And if I had to choose the perfect person to protect my baby girl? I’d pick her. Every day of the week. Twice on Sunday.
You don’t realize it yet, but your mom will move heaven and earth to ensure you have the best life possible. And if someone gets in the way of that… well, let’s just say, I feel sorry for them.
