Blair guessed the emotional pain had become so unbearable that, at some point, her body just shut down, switching to numbness as a defense mechanism. The weight of it all had become too much, and she no longer felt the urge to drown herself in alcohol or distractions. She wasn’t running from the pain anymore, just existing in it. Day after day, she went through the motions—attending her games, chatting with friends, moving through her life as if on autopilot. Her mind felt like it was somewhere else, detached from her body, as if she were floating above the ground, watching everything unfold. And to make it easier, she kept her ears closed, shutting out the noise of what everyone else was saying. She knew the details of what had happened in his life, but she had no clue what it all meant for hers.
Inside, Blair was dying—slowly, painfully, and silently. It was a strange sensation, the gradual erosion of herself, yet there was an odd peace in it. She didn’t know why, but she felt like it was somehow worth it. To feel so deeply, so intensely, even if it meant falling apart in the process, seemed to be part of some bigger narrative. Maybe this was what life was about: living through the pain, owning the story of it, even when it felt like it was consuming her. She couldn’t explain why, but she accepted it. This was her journey, even if it led to a place of emptiness.
Her fingers dug into the little star tattoo on her chest. She was still loyal to a ghost. It was a fucked up joke. But she— she was a bigger one.
