Waves of the Past
Blair stood in the middle of the crowded beach, the salty breeze from the ocean mixing with the hum of the people. Her brother had promised her that this trip to Rio would be the fresh start she needed—an escape, a chance to embrace life again. Well, he did have a good reason to send her away for a few days after seeing her refusing to enter her old house like a damn lunatic.
Yet, even surrounded by laughter and the carefree energy of her friends, she couldn’t shake the emptiness that lingered beneath the surface. She watched as they danced, her own body swaying with the music but never quite feeling the beat. A sudden flash of memory—his smile, the way he used to hold her—pulled her momentarily out of the present. But she masked it with a laugh, a quick joke, and before anyone could notice, she was back in the crowd, the walls around her heart as high as ever.
She had told herself she was fine—really, she had. But the truth was more complicated. Her friends had no idea that the last few years hadn’t been as easy as they thought. They didn’t know the quiet moments when the loneliness crept in, when the past slipped into her thoughts like an unwanted visitor. The pieces of her heart that had broken those three years ago were still scattered somewhere, hidden beneath the perfect facade she worked so hard to maintain. She stood still in the dancing crowd, unaware of her surroundings as she grabbed her phone to text her brother.
