it was hard to imagine a world where he didn't live by his one set schedule.

he'd left a boy in LA, coming home to reality with a confused mind and a broken heart. maybe it really wasn't meant to be but that was just the reality of things. he had learned with his divorce and subsequent attempts to meet new people that he needed to take it easily, actually. he needed to focus on what was really important to him and that was his family and their bakery.

and so he returned to the familiarity of delivering sweet and tasty pastries and treats to people every single day. he wasn't blessed with the patience nor curiosity to actually help bake desserts, but at least he loved to ride his bike around the city and see the smiles of the customers who were happy to receive their orders. many of the deliveries were to people who were receiving cakes as gifts. those were his favorites.

plus, there was no pain in getting to inhale the wafting scent of freshly baked cupcakes and cookies, muffins and croissants. his dads had poured their lives into this business and he just wanted to help out, much like his older brother, Finn, did.

but unlike Finn, Mika knew that he didn't want to do this for the rest of his life. he wanted to do art, but he knew that it was impossible to break into that scene without connections. he could have asked Finn to ask his husband what he could do, but Mika was honestly intimidated by Finn's partner. Leo had always been cold and quiet during family gatherings. he assumed that that was just how he was.

and so Mika stayed put in the job he had, a warm smile tugging at the corner of his lips every time the bell at the door chimed, announcing a new customer, or every time he handed a carefully wrapped cake to someone at their front door. it was satisfying in a way that he couldn't explain.

and so he continued his schedule, slowly forgetting the sunshine and salty waves of California. home was where he belonged.
