the rain hit the pavement in steady, rhythmic slaps. the kind of cold drizzle that soaked through jackets and into bones. he adjusted the cuffs of his coat, cutting through the street like a blade through silk. today was routine: meet the clients, secure the deal, return without a scratch.
the meeting spot was an abandoned billiards hall. his men flanked the room's edges like silent shadows, waiting for his signal. across the table, the clients sat. small time players with big ambitions. the kind he could use or crush, depending on their usefulness.
the negotiations were swift, decisive. he leaned in, speaking in low tones, letting the weight of his gaze do most of the work. when the papers were signed and the tension thinned, he stood, giving a single nod. another day, another set of pawns moving under his command.
he was halfway out the door when he saw him.
a man stood across the street, head tilted as he waited for something. tall, lean, wearing a black coat that hung off his frame. his hair was dark and his face had a sharpness to it. the same piercing gaze. the same cold cut of the mouth when it wasn't smiling.
it stopped him mid step. his men noticed the hesitation. a rare, unheard of thing and shifted uneasily. the stranger turned and walked away, swallowed by the rain.
the organization was his blood now. the deals, the control, the respect carved out by his own hands. family was a myth, a weakness whispered in forgotten dreams. and yet... somewhere, in the back of his mind where he rarely let himself go, a crack widened just a little more.
he would find that man eventually. not because he needed answers. not because he cared. but because no loose end could be allowed to wander his world unchecked.
he finished the drink in one sharp motion and reached for the phone. "get me everything you can find," he said, voice colder than the rain outside.
