Everett had done everything in his power to avoid Tabitha after their last encounter. He'd let weeks stretch into silence, creating as much distance as possible between them, because facing the emotional mess she stirred in him was something he wasn’t ready for. She had managed to peel back layers of him he didn’t even know existed, and in his mind, the best solution was to run. So when he saw her again, standing in the middle of a bustling London wedding, his heart sank. The universe, it seemed, had a sick sense of humor. Here he was, trapped in the very place he least wanted to be, staring at the one person who had the power to make him feel things he didn’t want to feel—things he had worked so hard to bury. The sight of her, radiant and effortlessly beautiful, made him ache in ways he couldn't ignore. He hated it.
Yet as much as he wanted to turn away, to shut her out once more, he couldn’t. The magnetic pull of her presence was impossible to deny. Tabitha was the kind of person who drew him in with ease, who made him believe that vulnerability wasn’t a weakness, even though every fiber of his being screamed against it. But he couldn’t let that happen again, not after everything he had told himself. He wasn’t the kind of man who could offer her stability or happiness; he wasn’t the kind of man who deserved it. Seeing her, in this moment, in this city, was a cruel reminder of what he couldn’t have. And no matter how badly he might have wanted to reach out, to bridge the gap between them, he couldn’t shake the feeling that dragging her back into his chaos would only break her in ways he couldn’t bear to witness.
She would pull him out of the black hole he’d fallen into, but in doing so, she would end up taking his place within it.
