The second possibility was that Morgan was using Sigrun’s situation as a cover story to negotiate something else. If this was indeed the case, it was clear that a rigged game was being played between the authorities and Morgan.

This led to a new question: What was the subject of the real negotiation? Sigrun’s mind drifted to Ronald’s visit just before last year’s Halloween.

That day, Sigrun and the others had been gathered in the safehouse’s common area, reviewing the blueprints for a lab attack, when Morgan and Ronald were locked in a tense conversation behind closed doors. Sigrun’s mind drifted back to that heated exchange, her thoughts echoing Morgan’s angry voice. “What are you refusing to understand, Ron?” Morgan had shouted. “Just one life for the millions they’ve taken. I’m offering you the real solution. What have your methods achieved for us? Nothing. How many more labs do you want us to attack? Those damn labs are like Hydra. I blow one up, and two more pop up before I’ve even left the scene. We’re making no progress. Understand this, you can’t have a revolution without blood. Just one life for the millions they’ve taken. Think about that, Ron. But if you send me to another damn lab…”

The memory of Morgan’s words lingered sharply in her mind. The finality in his tone had been unmistakable—everyone in the safehouse had understood exactly what he meant. Morgan was willing to sacrifice anything. And now, as she connected the dots, it became clear that Morgan’s current maneuvers might be aimed at eliminating Ronald.

Sigrun took another sip of her drink, her gaze unwavering. If Morgan had manipulated the situation with such skill, then the real negotiations were likely much darker.
