Sigrun was born and raised in Tromsø. Her father, Erik, a writer struggling with alcohol issues, was absent from her life. Her mother, Astrid, is a primary school teacher. Her parents separated shortly after Sigrun's birth. Following the divorce, Astrid married Magnus Valstad, who became a father figure to Sigrun.
Even though her father was absent, Sigrun's childhood was filled with joy thanks to Magnus. He took her and Vigdis on countless skiing trips in Trysil, guided them through Norway’s most famous hiking trails, and sailed with them across the Arctic Ocean.
These experiences shaped her lifelong dedication to environmental conservation; however, unlike Vigdis, Sigrun supports direct and forceful methods. She recently moved to London to join a radical group, the Animal Liberation Front, continuing her activism with a more extreme approach.
